Our review of the recently opened Bath Townhouse Coppa Club, found in the centre of one of England’s most beautiful cities!
Many of you will have read my review of our visit to the Coppa Club Bristol, which is based in Clifton, one of my favourite areas of Bristol. Well, when a new Coppa Club restaurant opened in Bath, I jumped at the opportunity to go and check it out.
Despite visiting on a Tuesday and the restaurant only opening the previous month, The Bath Townhouse Coppa Club was surprisingly busy and had a really nice vibe. The welcome was very warm and we were quickly guided to our table with a smile and some small talk.
I took the seat nearest the centrepiece staircase, the plush soft option, which enveloped me as a I sat down and made me fear that if I ate to much then I wouldn’t be able to get out again!
Once settled in and given our menus I had the chance to check out the décor, which had a really nice old world, art deco feel to it.
It wasn’t too long before our waiter came to take our drinks order, which was delivered pretty quick for a busy restaurant. In the past we’ve found that venues with a separate bar often lead to long waits for your beverages, which can be pretty frustrating when you’re dying for your next drink. We actually had to deal with this on our Bristol trip to Coppa Club, so this time round was a definite improvement.
Having just got over a nasty cold I wasn’t feeling up to ordering off the extensive wine list sadly, but my partner, Justin, had already spotted Peroni on tap and within a few minutes was in his happy beer place while I enjoyed a refreshing diet coke.
Coppa Club Starters
Well, it seems as though I am nothing if not consistent, as I yet again chose the seared king prawns for my starter, and although in some ways different from the version I had at Coppa Club Bristol, I’m glad to say they didn’t disappoint.
The well-cooked, generous portion of king prawns had a hint of lemon and chilli but not too much of a kick, more of a gentle poke. The one downside was that the chunks of garlic didn’t have much flavour, which. as a bit of a garlic fiend, made me a little sad.
Justin as usual went for something a bit different – “I will have the fish I cant pronounce” meant a salmon ceviche arrived. This was basically salmon sushi with a lovely citrus taste that was served with long, homemade sourdough pizza grissini sticks, which proved to be a great combination.
Mains that deserve the name..
Although they have a reasonably good gluten free menu including farm-reared chicken and roasted halibut I decided to go for the steak and I am very glad I did. The sauces didnt appeal, so I skipped those, but a good chef with an eye for seasoning ensured it came out not only perfectly cooked to my liking (medium rare) , but also delicious it was actually one of the tastiest steaks i’ve had in a really long time. (Miller and Carter eat your heart out!)
The steak came with a large, sliced flay tomato and pea shoots and the choice of fries or garlic and herb roast potatoes. As mentioned earlier, I’m a lover of garlic so just couldnt pass on the potatoes, which was the right decision as these crispy bad boys were the perfect combination of soft and fluffy centres and crunchy skins.
Justin decided that a British beef patty cooked pink was too hard to resist and he was glad he didn’t. The menu has it coming with mature cheddar, which he isn’t a fan of, so we asked if that could be replaced with mozzarella. The melted mozzarella, tomato, sauce and pink burger made for a mouthful of juicy goodness and the skinny fries complimented it beautifully.
Both dishes provided generous portion sizes yet again, and overall they couldn’t be faulted. We ordered a round of drinks during the main course and they again came after a short wait as the staff were attentive and always cheerful.
The third course
I decided to have the treacle tart to finish and the waiting staff were again happy to make an exchange; this time swapping crème fraiche for ice cream.
It was freshly made with a hint of lemon and topped with candied orange. I’m not a massive citrus fan, so these flavours didn’t do it for me, but I’m sure others would feel differently. The tart itself was fine, but I guess after the the first two courses being so tasty, I was left a little disappointed. Still, you can’t win them all!
Justin had decided he’d already eaten enough so just went with couple of scoops of Jude’s ice cream. There was a good flavour selection and he was quite content with his choices of salted caramel and raspberry sorbet.
What we thought of the Bath Townhouse – Coppa Club
It won’t surprise you to know that we both really enjoyed our trip to The Townhouse Bath – Coppa Club. The staff were cheerful and the service was a good balance of attentive yet not too in your face.
Justin would definitely have the salmon again though he also wants to try out the prawns after a small case of food envy. I, on the other hand, am gagging to have one of their sourdough pizzas as the one in Bristol was so damn tasty.
