You’ve booked the flights. You’ve got a vague idea of three countries you want to hit. Then you start reading about train strikes, delayed regional buses, and the fact that that medieval hilltop village you wanted to visit has exactly one bus a day, at 6:47 AM.
That’s when you realize: the best way to see Europe is behind the wheel. No schedules. No luggage limits. No waiting on platforms. Just you, the road, and the freedom to pull over when you see something worth stopping for.
Here are seven routes that deliver exactly that experience.
1. The Amalfi Coast Drive, Italy — 50km of Pure Drama
Distance: 50 km (31 miles) from Sorrento to Salerno
Driving time without stops: 1.5 hours
Realistic time with stops: 4–6 hours (or a full day if you’re smart)
This is not a drive you rush. The SS163 clings to cliffs that drop straight into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Hairpin turns every 200 meters. Buses the size of small houses coming the other way. It sounds stressful — and parts of it are — but the payoff is relentless.

2. The Romantic Road, Germany — 350km of Fairy-Tale Villages

Start early — gates open at 6 AM. The light is best before 10 AM. Stop at every numbered viewpoint (there are 12). The Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe at the top has a visitor center with a glacier panorama and a restaurant serving käsespätzle (€12).
Skip this if: you’re on a tight budget, driving a low-clearance sports car, or visiting in October when snow closures can happen without warning.
5. The Transfăgărășan Highway, Romania — 90km of Bucket-List Driving
Distance: 90 km (56 miles) from Bascov to Curtea de Argeș

Best time: July to September (closed from November to June)
Top Gear called it “the best road in the world.” The Transfăgărășan cuts through the Carpathian Mountains with tunnels, viaducts, and a 200-meter-long dam crossing. The highest point is 2,042 meters at Bâlea Lake.

6. The Atlantic Road, Norway — 8km of Architectural Wonder
Eight kilometers. Fifteen minutes of driving. But you’ll stop every 500 meters to take photos. The Atlantic Road connects a series of islands with bridges that curve and dip like roller coasters. The Storseisundet Bridge is the most dramatic — it looks like it disappears into the ocean.
Cost: Free (no toll). Parking: There are several pull-offs with small parking areas. The visitor center at the start has toilets and a cafe (coffee €5).
